Be sure that your browser is not muted accidentally.
If the chat sounds are not working, make sure Facebook’s built-in Chat Sounds option is enabled.
If certain sounds don’t work properly on Firefox, but there are also some sounds that DO work, please check your sound card settings, as this is most likely your audio driver causing problems.
Sometimes notification sounds might trigger many times, this should be rare though.
